Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 9th that fabless (semiconductor design) companies attracted from outside the region are actively collaborating with local enterprises to develop new Artificial Intelligence (AI) products.
According to relevant institutions and the industry, fabless companies that relocated to Gwangju—including AimFuture, Mobilint, and SuperGate—have begun joint AI research and cooperation for new innovations. This involves integrating their proprietary semiconductor technologies with the products of local demand-side companies such as NH Networks, HoGreen Air, Dr. K Healthcare, Alphanox, Douyoung Corp., INTFlow, and Witches.
This initiative, dubbed the ‘Next-Generation Intelligent Semiconductor Application On-Device AI Scale-up Valley Nurturing Project,’ is jointly promoted by the Gwangju Technopark and the ETRI Honam Research Center. It was established to launch new solutions by integrating the semiconductor technology of Gwangju-attracted fabless firms with the AI products of local demand companies.
AimFuture, which Gwangju attracted in October last year, unveiled the prototype ‘AiM-GJ-1’—an AI semiconductor specifically designed for Gwangju City’s AI validation projects—at ‘CES 2025,’ the world’s largest IT and electronics exhibition, this January in the US.
Following this, AimFuture addressed the requirements of local demand company NH Networks by introducing an ‘EV Charging Station Fire Detection and Prediction Service’ utilizing the semiconductor. This AI product detects the temperature of electric vehicle chargers via real-time CCTV and triggers an alarm to the management authority if the temperature exceeds 60℃.
Gwangju City plans to actively support the diffusion of AI-based solutions across various fields through the validation of semiconductor technologies developed by the fabless companies that have settled in the region. The city is also committed to fostering and recruiting local talent alongside the development of ‘Gwangju-Style AI Semiconductor’ technology.
Choi Tae-jo, Director General of the City’s AI Industry Office, stated, “We are dedicating our utmost efforts to drive digital innovation through the convergence of AI and intelligent semiconductors, and to enable these companies to grow into globally competitive enterprises.” He added, “We will spare no support to help companies map out their future and walk the path to success in Gwangju, the leading city of AI.”
